In 1883 Congress granted $50,000 to build a lighthouse on the eastern tip of Sanibel Island. The four-legged iron lighthouse was constructed in the north, and just two miles from its final destination, the ship carrying the lighthouse materials sank. However, most of the pieces were recovered and the lighthouse was constructed and lit on August 20, 1884. In 1962 the Coast Guard electrified the light which now belongs to the City Of Sanibel.
